This past weekend, I was in Maryland with Asa. It had only been a couple weeks at this point since we'd seen each other, but it was still so special. We have had a difficult time readjusting to a long distance relationship, so any time we get to spend a few days together, we make the most out of it. Whether that is traveling to the beach or bumming out on the couch watching how I met your mother, we spend that time together. The people Asa is living with were kind enough to let me take over a room in their house for the weekend and I am so thankful to them for allowing me to stay in their home. We love adventuring, but we also love relaxing, and this past weekend was full of both of those things. Here is a recap of our weekend! I documented as much as I could in pictures, so this post is really picture heavy!
My flight was wicked early in the morning, so my wonderful father dropped me off at the airport at 4:30am for my 6:00am flight. The flight is a short one, so by 7am I was on the ground in DC. I got off the plane, grabbed my luggage, and hopped on the metro to fort totten where Asa was meeting me. We put my suitcase and carry on bag in the car and got back on the metro. He doesn't work until 3pm on Thursdays, so we had previously decided to head into the city for a few hours after I arrived. We grabbed breakfast at a new place we had seen online, The Blind Dog Cafe (YUM) and went to the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History, which we were both really impressed with. Once we were done in the city, we grabbed lunch at Chipotle and headed to the church for Asa to work. He worked and I did some blogging things. We grabbed Jersey Mike's for dinner and I felt a deep satisfaction. My roommate Emily (you'll meet her later in the post) introduced me to Jersey Mike's and I fell in love. Best sub place ever and there aren't any close to me in New England. Asa had worship practice that night, so I relaxed in the nursery (because everyone knows that's where the comfy couches are in a church) and watched how I met your mother while writing down our directions for the next day. It was a great start to a great long weekend. :)
Friday morning we woke up early and got on the road. We traveled to Virginia Beach for the day, since we had a wedding in Hampton on Saturday. We got on the beach and bummed out for a few hours. We had BLT's for lunch, and then spent a good hour and a half in the ocean because it was SO warm and the waves were awesome! We bummed around a little more after that and then left the beach, we were staying with a friend that night so we went there to shower and change. After that we headed over to explore the campus of Regent University, which is where I've considered doing a Masters Degree, and I was blown away by how gorgeous the campus was! It was beautifully landscaped and the buildings just took my breath away! We had dinner at the Macaroni Grill after that and then decided to retire for the evening. Another beautiful day indeed!
Side Note: Virginia Beach is officially the furthest south I've ever been in the continental U.S.A. I need to travel more...
We slept in a little bit on Saturday, which was nice since I had been up at 3 & 4 the previous two days. We had breakfast and got changed, packed up and drove up to Hampton, Virginia for the wedding of two of our most dear friends from college, Karen & Michael. Karen and I have been friends since our freshman year and Michael was welcomed into our friends circle when he transferred to Valley Forge our sophomore year. Asa and I just absolutely adore this couple and we were so excited to witness them say "I do". Their ceremony was absolutely beautiful! Karen was stunningly gorgeous and Michael was handsome as ever. He sang to her during their vows and I was so glad that one of our friends had tissues handy. The reception was beautiful as well and so much fun. It was so good to catch up with friends and celebrate such a wonderful couple. That night we drove back up to Maryland because Asa had to lead worship the next morning. However, the adventures weren't over! We stopped in Fredericksburg, Virginia and two firsts happened for me. For the first time ever, I walked into a Sheetz (verdict: wawa is still better) and I had a Krispy Kreme Donut for the first time! I didn't know what I was missing with the Krispy Kreme. We made it home a little after midnight and it was straight to bed.
Sunday morning was church and then afterwards we had lunch with the folks that Asa is living with to celebrate Ms. Sandy's birthday! It was a wonderful meal and we had a great time with them. After lunch, Asa and I went to our favorite mall for a little while. We tried on WEDDING RINGS and picked out a few we like, spent too much time in Burlington Coat Factory, and just enjoyed walking around hand in hand. We grabbed dinner at flippin' pizza and dessert at cold stone and then went home for a relaxing evening watching how I met your mother together. For some reason the only picture I got that day was of the ice cream we shared.
Asa decided to not go into work on Monday and instead work this coming Friday (tomorrow) instead which is normally his day off. We relaxed for the morning and watched even more how I met your mother. We went to Jersey Mike's again for lunch and then drove by a house we saw online. We went to Monster Mini Golf and the grocery store, then we drove down to Bethesda to spend the evening at my former roommate's new apartment. Let me tell you about Emily, we mutually knew the lady we both lived with, but didn't know each other before I moved in. We had heard things about each other, and neither of us thought we would become friends, but we're both very glad we did. We quickly clicked and became much closer than we ever imagined we would be. We've both since moved out of that house, but we've remained close. Asa and I went over and spent the evening laughing, watching movies, and playing cards with her and her boyfriend Joe, and their adorable puppy, Flic. It was so good to see them, and we can't wait to see them again. We left and went home and to bed, since I had to go to the airport for 6:30 the next morning.
Surprise! I was supposed to go home Tuesday morning. We got up, Asa drove me all the way to the airport, and then all the way back home. My flight was delayed for mechanical issues, and it became pretty clear it was going to be cancelled. I waited it out a little bit, but when the flight crew came off the plane and they took the plane away from the gate, I hopped in line and I am glad I did. Shortly after I got in line, they announced the flight was cancelled and I only had to wait in a line with two people in front of me instead of 50 like those who didn't get in line until after they announced the cancellation. I rebooked my flight for the next morning and called Asa. I hopped on the metro again and he picked me up with starbucks in hand. (he knows me really well) I dropped him off at work and took his car back to the house to relax and shower while he had staff meeting, then I picked us up lunch and spent the afternoon at work with him. He bought me a new planner and I obsessed a little over it, and we spent that evening relaxing and watching America's Got Talent. It was unexpected for us to have this extra day together, but I am so thankful that we did.
Thanks for reading this recap of our weekend! I am so grateful that I got to spend so much time with Asa! I can't wait to fly back to Maryland a week from today and spend another long weekend with him to celebrate another wedding of our friends! I am loving this season of life!
